NATIONAL EDITION
The National Edition of the Works of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was established by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities by Ministerial Decree dated 9 June 2009.
The edition aims to present the complete corpus of Pergolesi’s musical works in critical form, conceived to meet the dual needs of scholarly research and informed performance practice. It is intended both for musicologists engaging with the sources according to current methodological standards, and for performers seeking to revive Pergolesi’s oeuvre in historically grounded interpretations.
The Edition is structured into 20 volumes encompassing Pergolesi’s theatrical, sacred, vocal, and instrumental works, along with a thematic catalogue and a dedicated volume containing the librettos of his dramatic works and other literary texts set to music by the composer.
Each volume includes, in addition to the full musical score, a historical introduction in both Italian and English, a description of the sources and editorial challenges encountered, a critical commentary on the score, facsimile reproductions of selected source materials, and, where appropriate, appendices.
